The “Grit” tee is inspired by Peter Callaghan and Sonja Silver. Through the 90s and early 2000s Tacoma was often described as gritty by outsiders, but mainly used as an insult. This changed in 2003 when Tacoma News Tribune writer Peter Callaghan wrote an article describing an alternate meaning of the word grit. Sonja Silver soon after created a shirt that read, “Gritty Tacoman.”
